Trauma can cause prolonged disability or death. Its management requires quick medical action and often surgery. Surgical techniques can also be part of the diagnostic procedure to assess the condition of the patient. A tube or catheter may be placed to drain fluid from the peritoneum, the pericardium or the chest, especially when there is severe blunt trauma to the chest or abdomen. In cases where the patient is exhibiting dropping blood-pressure levels, possibly due to bleeding in the abdominal cavity, surgically cutting through the abdominal wall is vital. The assessment of the injury is made with the aid of imaging and physical examination. This allows the understanding of the severity of the injury and the location of the damage. A majority of trauma-related deaths occur from unrecognized intra-abdominal bleeding. These could be prevented if prompt surgical intervention takes place. Therefore, exploratory surgeries are often conducted to determine the extent of abdominal injuries. Damage control surgery can save life and limb.
