SURPRISED BY GOD'S GRACE is a collection of 100 sermons preached between 1967 and 2016, organized by seasons of the Church Year. Texts, subject matter, timing and locations vary widely, but the prime focus is the proclamation of the gospel, the good news of God meant to redeem and transform creation and all of humanity.

ARLON K. STUBBE has been enchanted by reading and writing since grade school. That love of words morphed into a career of producing and delivering sermons for 41 years, stints as an op-ed writer for three local newspapers, the crafting of poems, membership in a creative writing group at Penn State-Shenango Campus, and the publication of four non-fiction books. First came his doctoral dissertation, re-written for public consumption, titled SOLVING THE MISSING MEMBER PUZZLE. It details the causes of church member inactivity and over a hundred corrective steps that can be taken by congregations and staff members. Next in print was SHAPING THE WORD, a co-authored work on persuasive language in preaching, based on information from Frank Morris -- a longtime friend and psychotherapist. A smaller book, CLERGY BLOOPERS, relates humorous events from Stubbe's 41 years of serving in three congregations, and now comes SURPRISED BY GOD'S GRACE, a selection of sermons that Dr. Stubbe has preached during his career. Nearing retirement, Stubbe turned to fiction and currently has ten novels in print. Three are historical fiction works: one that presents the 'Jesus saga' as seen through the eyes of Malchus - the high priest's chief servant, and two others on the lives and careers of Nicolo Paganini and St. John Chrysostom. The remaining eight novels are set in the 1960's, 1970's and the 21st century and cover a wide range of subject matter: from episodes in the same motel room, to gun violence (with Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday reacting to the widespread use of guns in the U.S. in 2012), to several books that deal with personal relationships, plus a mystery hunt, and a ghost story. Dr. Stubbe continues to write novels, do supply preaching, and has posted over 100 articles on hubpages.com under the byline: Bear Tales.
