Great Lakes merchant sailors provided photographs of their own experiences and collaborated with the author, Bob Ojala by sharing many interesting and funny stories of their years on the Great Lakes. If you're interested in the history of the Great Lakes, ships of all kinds, and women in atypical careers, will enjoy this book. The author spent four years in the U.S. Coast Guard, 17 years as a ship Surveyor with the American Bureau of Shipping, nearly 9 years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and has managed in his own business as a marine consultant for over 35 years. Bob is still active in the marine industry. His father was a Merchant Mariner for 32 years, giving Bob the interest in the Maritime Industry, his hundreds of contacts with sailors, and his respect for their profession.

About The Author

Ojala, Bob: - Bob Ojala earned a BSE in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan and has spent nearly five decades in the maritime industry, including service with the U.S. Coast Guard, the American Bureau of Shipping, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. For more than thirty years, he has also run his own marine surveying and consulting business, traveling the world to survey cruise ships, tankers, dry docks, and warships. Inspired by his father, a merchant mariner of thirty-two years, Bob has spent his career honoring the men and women of the maritime world. He is the author of several non-fiction books and Sweetwater Sailors, a picture book celebrating Great Lakes sailors. More stories are on the way, including The Tugboater Family and additional tales drawn from his experiences aboard 165 ocean cruises.
