Das Tempo und die Intensität der Veränderungen führen zu häufig vollständig verplanten und genutzten Landschaften, die auch als "funktionale Landschaften" bezeichnet werden. Monotonie und Nivellierungen gehen unter diesen Bedingungen dabei häufig aus der früheren Landschaftsvielfalt hervor. Als Gegenbewegung zu den Uniformierungsprozessen in Zeiten der Globalisierung ist verstärkt in den letzten Jahren eine Trendwende auch in Politik und Gesellschaft hin zur Sicherung der regionalen Identität der verschiedenen Naturräume und Kulturlandschaften aufgekommen. Mit den vermehrt einheitlich ablaufenden, das Landschaftsbild direkt beeinflussenden Prozessen sind prägende Elemente der Kulturlandschaften und folglich auch die regionale Identität und das Gefühl einer charakteristischen Heimat gefährdet. Dieser vereinheitlichenden Entwicklungstendenz wird seit einigen Jahren mehr und mehr Rechnung getragen, indem zunehmend Bemühungen unternommen werden den Wert der einzelnen Kulturlandschaften und der damit verbundenen regionalen Identität zu erhalten oder wieder herzustellen. Aufgrund der gro en Flächenanteile, die die Landwirtschaft nutzt, haben die Landwirte einen sehr bedeutsamen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Kulturlandschaften. Von jeher hat in Deutschland vor allem die Landwirtschaft mit ihren Bewirtschaftungsweisen das Bild der Kulturlandschaft geprägt. Die Landwirtschaft wird einerseits als Bedrohung für die gewachsenen Kulturlandschaften und vorhandenen Strukturen und Elemente, die die Landschaft prägen, angesehen, aber andererseits bieten sich in der Landbewirtschaftung Chancen
