An Aktualität hat der Text seitdem jedoch wohl kaum etwas eingebü t. Dieser Aufsatz behandelt das Tauschphänomen in den Wahlverwandtschaften. Unterschiedliche Aspekte verweisen darauf, wie vielfältig hier Tauschverhältnisse auftreten: Begriffe wie Besitz, Gewinn, Verzicht, Opfer und Mangel werden verwendet. Im Mittelpunkt des Romans stehen der Partnertausch und das chemische Gleichnis der "Wahlverwandtschaften", das dem Roman den Namen gegeben hat. Beides ist in der Forschung bereits eingehend diskutiert worden. Eduards und Lucianes Verschwendungssucht fällt auf und dagegen die von Charlotte intendierte Sparsamkeit und Ottilies Enthaltsamkeit. Luciane schlüpft in ihrem Rollentausch in ständig neue Verkleidungen und auch die neue herannahende Epoche, die im Roman diskutiert wird, die kulturelle Innovation, kann als Tauschvorgang betrachtet werden. Eduards Austausch von Zeichen für Zufall und Schicksal ist der figurative Tausch im semantischen Feld als Übertragung, Umcodierung und Bedeutungsaustausch. Die geläufigste Kommunikationsform scheint im Roman der Briefaustausch zu sein und die Kommunikation an sich wiederum funktioniert augenscheinlich nicht. Der Tauschaspekt innerhalb zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen soll hier Schwerpunkt sein. Es ist nicht möglich, alle Aspekte des Tauschs, so wie sie in den Wahlverwandtschaften auftreten, zu behandeln. Da der Roman allerdings eine sehr genaue Beobachtung sozialer Konflikte liefert und die experimentelle Darstellung für eine Verallgemeinerung spricht, erscheint es interessant, sich mit der Verbindung zwischen ökonomischem und sozialem Au
