Zwieg schreibt, dass die Elektrizität alle Grenzen überspringt, und "erst durch diese Entdeckung hat die Relation von Raum und Zeit die entscheidendste Umstellung seit Erschaffung der Welt erfahren." Plötzlich ist alles viel schneller geworden, und die Welt öffnete sich für jedermann. Zeitungen klagten, dass sie wegen der Überflut von Weltnachrichten nicht mehr zur lokalen Berichterstattung kommen. Wie konnte die Welt auf einmal so klein werden? Welche technischen Pioniertaten und Medien haben es ermöglicht? Viele vergleichen das Telegraphennetz des 19. Jahrhunderts mit dem heutigen Internet, um es besser erklären zu können. Denn alles was uns in Bezug auf Geschwindigkeit der Kommunikation heute selbstverständlich ist, musste in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entvisioniert und verwirklicht werden. Einen Meilenstein in diesem Prozess war die Unterwassertelegraphie, also der Moment, als die Leitung das Land verlassen hat und in das Wasser gelegt wurde. In der folgenden Arbeit versuche ich die Entstehung und Spezifizierung des Mediums Seekabel zu erläutern.
