Cette monographie présente une analyse basée sur le concept géographique de l'interprétation territoriale. Elle analyse dans quelle mesure la création et la mise en oeuvre d'une unité de conservation contribuent au maintien de la culture des populations traditionnelles. Le cas de la réserve écologique de Juatinga, située sur la côte sud de Rio de Janeiro, dans la municipalité de Paraty/RJ, a été choisi. Il a fallu étudier les différentes conceptions du territoire, l'histoire de l'idéal de conservation qui a abouti à la création des zones protégées et la législation brésilienne sur les unités de conservation. En outre, il a fallu caractériser les acteurs sociaux présents dans la réserve écologique de Juatinga: la population traditionnelle caiçara, l'organisme de gestion de l'environnement responsable et les gestionnaires de l'environnement travaillant dans la région. Une étude exploratoire de la réserve a également été réalisée. Nous pouvons conclure que les différents intérêts présents dans la création et la mise en oeuvre de l'unité de conservation interfèrent directement avec le maintien de la culture caiçara.
