Laqueur 2001), ohne Medienberichterstattung würden terroristische Taten weitgehend ins Leere laufen (vgl. Hoffmann 2001) und Terroristen bräuchten die Medien (vgl. Hirschmann 2003). Trotz dieser auf den ersten Blick dominierenden Meinung ist die Beziehung zwischen Medien und Terrorismus alles andere als eindimensional. Anhand des aktuellen Beispiels von Terrorismus im Irak nach dem Irak-Krieg 2003 sollen die obigen Betrachtungen einer genaueren Analyse unterzogen werden. Zum einen soll gezeigt werden, welche Aspekte bei der Betrachtung von Massenmedien und Terrorismus eine Rolle spielen, zum anderen soll anhand einer Positionsbestimmung verschiedener Gruppen im Irak sichtbar gemacht werden, dass nicht jeder Anschlag als ein Teil im Puzzle des "Internationalen Terrorismus" zu sehen ist, sondern auch lokale Interessen verfolgt werden können. Dazu kommt, dass verschiedene im Irak aktive Gruppen ein unterschiedliches Verhältnis zu den Medien haben. In diese Buch werden zuerst die Begriffe "Terrorismus" und "Massenmedien" definiert. Danach folgt eine Betrachtung, ob Medien auf Terrorismus angewiesen sind. Im Anschluss wird geschaut, ob Terroristen im Gegensatz dazu auf die Medien angewiesen sind und ob es Unterschiede hinsichtlich der terroristischen Ziele und der Medienabhängigkeit gibt. Nach dieser allgemein gehaltenen Einleitung folgt die Untersuchung des konkreten Beispiels.
