When Vasquez's men demand the ten-dollar toll for safe passage, Sample politely declines. The resulting ambush on the trail leaves two outlaws dead, the gang humiliated, and Sample with a bullet hole through his favorite hat. Instead of riding away, the drifter turns his bay horse around and rides right back down the center of Main Street to deliver the bodies-and a message.

What starts as a dispute over a ruined hat escalates into a one-man war. Operating from the shadows of the lumberyard and the rooftops of the saloons, Sample systematically dismantles Vasquez's empire. He protects an indebted schoolmarm from Dutch's violent grasp and steals the black ledger that holds the town hostage.

Desperate to regain control, Vasquez offers the lethal drifter a buyout-a "Texas cut" of the entire criminal enterprise. But Hector Vasquez is about to learn that you can't buy a man who only trades in absolute justice.
