Er erwarb den Diplom-Ingenieur in Biotechnologie an der Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin und den Diplom-Biochemiker an der Freien Universität Berlin. Seine Doktorarbeit auf dem Gebiet der theoretischen Biochemie und Bioinformatik führte er am Max Planck Institut für molekulare Genetik durch und erwarb 2002 den Grad eines Doktors der Naturwissenschaften von der Freien Universität Berlin. Er hielt Vorlesungen und Seminare im Bereich Bioinformatik an der Universität zu Köln, der Technischen Universität Braunschweig und der Universität Wien. Er hat mehr als 15 Jahre Erfahrung in der Entwicklung von bioinformatischen Algorithmen und ist Autor einer Reihe wissenschaftlicher Publikationen.
