About The Book

Obwohl der Mensch seit Jahrtausenden metallische Werkstoffe verwendet, ist die Erkenntnis, da alle Metalle aus Kristallen aufgebaut sind, erst sehr jungen Datums. Aber auch nachdem die Metallkristalle als solche bekannt waren, nahm selbst die Wissenschaft lange Zeit wenig oder gar keine Notiz von ihnen. Zwar verfügte man in der Mineralogie schon seit langem über Untersuchungsverfahren für stalle, die aber auf die meistens sehr viel grö eren, durchsichtigen und mit gut ausgebildeten, äu eren Kristallflächen versehenen Kristalle der Mineralien abgestellt waren. Die kleinen, keine äu erenKristallflächen aufweisenden "Körner" der Metalle schienen auch den Mineralogen nicht der Untersuchung wert zu sein. Die Nichtbeachtung der Metallkristalle wurde noch dadurch begünstigt, da eine besonders auffällige und praktisch wichtige Eigenschaft der Metalle, ihre pla- stische Verformbarkeit, eher auf eine Verwandtschaft mit den amorphen, bild- samen Materialien wie Ton, hinzuweisen schien. Es zeigte sich, da man in der Tat für die Erforschung der Gesetzmä igkeiten der Verformung die kristalline Natur der Metalle weitgehend vernachlässigen konnte, "da die Grö e der Metall- 1 körner gegen jene der betrachteten Deformationen wesentlich zurücktritt". So ist es für viele wissenschaftliche, z. B. die meisten der in der Verformungskunde behandelten Fragen und erst recht für die Praxis der Verarbeitung und Ver- wendung von Eisen und Nichteisenmetallen auch heute noch durchaus üblich und möglich, den metallischen Werkstoff so zu betrachten, als ob er homogen und isotrop sei.
