Billy Casper tied him and then won the playoff. In 1987, nine players went into Sunday within three strokes of the lead. The favorite, Tom Watson, was defeated as Scott Simpson took the day, without the need for a playoff. In 1998, Payne Stewart went into Sunday with a four-stroke lead but the legacy of Hogan, Palmer and Watson loomed before him. He too, would falter, allowing Lee Janzen to make his way to the top. No player broke par for the tournament and only Janzen equaled it. Frank Doyle Frank Doyle has had the good fortune to be a member of the Olympic Club for over 50 years. He attended the '66, '87 and '98 U.S. Opens played at the Olympic Club and witnessed first hand many of the shots described within his book. The stories surrounding the '55 U.S. Open, involving Ben Hogan and Jack Fleck, were told to him by his father, Francis J. Doyle, M.D., who also was a long-time member of the famed Olympic Club.
