The historian operating in the wake of recent events lacks the clarifying distance of centuries, and the dust from the collapsing structures of the era has barely settled. Yet, the sheer velocity and magnitude of the transformations that occurred between the years 2000 and 2025 demand an immediate, structural synthesis. We have lived through a discrete historical epoch-what this book terms the "Short Quarter-Century"-and we cannot hope to navigate the turbulence of the decades ahead without first objectively mapping the terrain we have just crossed.
This book is born from a fundamental recognition: the global consensus that inaugurated the twenty-first century was an illusion, and its subsequent disintegration was not an accident, but a structural inevitability. In the year 2000, the intellectual and political elites of the North Atlantic were captivated by the "End of History"-the teleological assumption that unipolar American hegemony, paired with deregulated financial capitalism and liberal democracy, represented the final, perfected form of human governance. By 2025, that architecture lay in ruins. In its place emerged a deeply fragmented, multipolar world defined by the return of territorial war, the consolidation of techno-feudal oligopolies, a global populist revolt against the political center, and the undeniable, escalating constraints of the Anthropocene.
The objective of this work is to explain how and why this transition occurred. To do so, it deliberately discards the superficial chronology of political headlines and the moralizing binaries of the era. Instead, it adopts a macroscopic, materialist methodology. It argues that the political superstructures of the period-from the hubris of the War on Terror to the seismic electoral shocks of 2016 and the vaccine nationalism of the COVID-19 pandemic-can only be understood as reflections of profound shifts in the material base.
Throughout the text, our analysis is anchored in verifiable data and observable structural realities. We will trace the unbundling of global supply chains and the resulting bifurcation of global wealth, mapping how the rise of the "Asian Workshop" simultaneously lifted hundreds of millions out of absolute poverty while hollowing out the industrial working classes of the West. We will examine the digital enclosure, tracking how the utopian early internet was systematically privatized to extract human behavioral data, ultimately culminating in the advent of generative artificial intelligence and a new, highly centralized mode of production. Above all, we will ground this human history within its absolute physical parameters: the demographic polarization between an aging Global North and a youthful Global South, and the catastrophic collision between a capitalist system requiring infinite growth and the finite thermodynamic limits of the biosphere.
History is not a random sequence of crises, nor is it driven by the mere whims of individual statesmen. It is the complex, often violent process of human societies struggling to adapt their political institutions to rapidly evolving modes of production and material constraints. The Short Quarter-Century dismantled the illusions of the post-Cold War world. This book is an attempt to clear the ideological debris and present a factual, evidence-based anatomy of that dismantling, offering the reader a structural foundation for understanding the fractured world of 2025 and the daunting century that lies ahead.
