Many students have trouble grasping the algebra concepts they need to know to pass standardized tests and move on to higher mathematics. The Algebra Teacher's Guide to Reteaching Essential Concepts and Skills is a hands-on resource that offers valuable tips and lessons for teaching all students--but especially those who are struggling--the complexities of algebra.

In simple terms, the authors outline 150 classroom-tested mini-lessons that focus on the algebra concepts students most often find difficult to understand: integers, variables, expressions, rational numbers, equations, inequalities, graphs of points and lines, functions, and more. Each lesson requires only a few minutes of instruction and can be used with individual students, groups, or the whole class. Also included are reproducible work-sheets that are designed to review and reinforce algebra concepts and key skills.

The worksheets can be used as

  • Reinforcement of learned material

  • Closure of the day's topic

  • Do-nows for review of the previous day's work

  • Sponge activities to fill transitional times (for example, when some students complete class work sooner than others)

Judith A. Muschla (Jackson, NJ) taught mathematics in South River, New Jersey, at the middle school and high school for over twenty-five years. At South River Middle School she helped revise the mathematics curriculum to reflect the Standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), coordinated interdisciplinary units, and conducted mathematics workshops for teachers and parents.

Gary Robert Muschla (Jackson, NJ) taught at Appleby School in Spotswood, New Jersey, for more than twenty-five years. Judith and Gary have coauthored several very successful math activity books, including The Algebra Teacher's Activities Kit and Hands-On Math Projects with Real Life Applications.

Erin Muschla (Freehold, NJ) teaches middle school math and algebra at Monroe Township Middle School in Monroe, New Jersey. She is also a coauthor with Judith and Gary of The Math Teacher's Survival Guide, and The Elementary Teacher's Book of Lists.
