Thomas Caverhill Jerdon (1811–1872) was an English physician, zoologist, and pioneering ornithologist in India. He described numerous bird species, including Jerdon’s courser and Jerdon’s baza, and contributed to Indian fauna's systematic study. Jerdon also authored The Birds of India (1862–64) and co-initiated The Fauna of British India series. His wide natural history interests spanned birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants. Despite personal challenges, his work left a lasting legacy in Indian zoology, and several species, including the genus Jerdonia, are named after him.
