What would you do if you lived in the biggest house on your street but felt like the smallest person in the world?
Nine-year-old Theodore "Theo" Wellington III has everything a boy could want - a grand mansion on Maple Avenue, beautiful gardens, and parents who love him dearly. But in 1924, his world feels impossibly small. With a rule for everything and parents who worry about dangers he doesn't understand, Theo dreams of adventure beyond his perfectly manicured life.
Everything changes the day Theo discovers a magnificent hot air balloon hidden in the old carriage house, left behind by the mansion's previous owners who once traveled the world. When his parents are busy with important grown-up matters, Theo sees his chance for the freedom he's always craved.
Floating high above the charming town of Flatbrook, New York, Theo finally feels free - until he realizes he has no idea how to steer! His unexpected landing at a country store introduces him to Emma, a spirited girl who asks more questions than anyone he's ever met. Through Emma and her railroad-working family, Theo begins to understand that sometimes the people who love us most show it in ways we don't always recognize.
Set against the fascinating backdrop of post-World War I America, this heartwarming tale explores the universal childhood experience of feeling misunderstood while celebrating the unbreakable bonds of family love. Young readers will cheer for Theo's courage as he discovers that the greatest adventures aren't about escaping from the people who love you - they're about learning to see the world through their eyes.
