This final book by renowned WWII history writer Charles Whiting records the events of the momentous last year of the war in Europe. From the launch of the spectacular invasion force off the southern British beaches of Normandy for D-Day, through the long push across France and the Low Countries, to the final bitter fight into Germany and Berlin, Whiting focuses on the men who struggled, lived, and died on the battlefront.

Author Charles Whiting saw active service under both the British and United States armies during this period of the war, and this insight lends a natural sympathy and authenticity to his writing. He draws on numerous sources to inform his work and many personal interviews to provide a thorough account of events experienced by the ordinary soldier.

During 1944-45, the British Army, under the command of Field Marshal Montgomery, fought and marched across Europe from the coast of Normandy to the Baltic Sea, where he received the final German surrender. Thousands of lives were lost in this last year of the war, many of them young reinforcements of only 18 or 19 who were hurried in to fill the ranks. This book is a testament to the courage of all the men and women who fought under the banner of the British Army during this year and played a vital role in Allied victory.
