The Call of the Twentieth Century urged Indians to break free from colonial rule and rediscover their cultural identity. The call emphasized unity, education, self-reliance, and justice as the foundation for progress. This period demanded courageous leadership and vision, sparking the Indian struggle for independence. Visionary leaders like Gandhi, Nehru, and Subhas Chandra Bose played pivotal roles in inspiring the masses, fostering a deep sense of nationalism, and laying the groundwork for India’s eventual freedom in 1947, after a long and arduous fight.

John Murdoch (1819–1904) was a Scottish Christian missionary in Ceylon and India. His works, such as The Indian Missionary Manual (1864) and The History of Civilization in India (1902), explored India’s culture, religion, and social development under British rule. Murdoch advocated for modernization through Western influence, focusing on education, caste, and theosophy. His writings emphasized reforms in governance, education, and religion, reflecting his missionary perspective on India’s advancement under British colonial influence.
