The book was first published in 1853 and contains translations of the plays into English.The first play, The Acharnians, is a political satire that tells the story of a farmer who, tired of the ongoing Peloponnesian War, negotiates a peace treaty with Sparta on his own. The second play, Knights, is a satire of Athenian politics that portrays the demagogue Cleon as a corrupt and power-hungry figure.The third play, Clouds, is a satire of the philosopher Socrates and his followers, as well as a critique of the sophist movement in Athens. The fourth play, Wasps, is a satire of the Athenian legal system and the obsession with litigation that was prevalent at the time.The fifth play, Peace, is a fantasy in which the protagonist, Trygaeus, flies to the heavens on a giant dung beetle to negotiate peace with the gods.
