The Contrast: A Comedy In Five Acts is a play written by Royall Tyler in 1920. Set in New York City in the late 18th century, the play explores the contrast between American and British cultures through the interactions of various characters. The main plot revolves around Maria, a young American woman who is engaged to Jonathan, a wealthy but uneducated American. Maria's mother, Mrs. Van Rough, is eager for her daughter to marry Colonel Manly, a British officer who represents the refined and cultured lifestyle of the British upper class. Alongside this central plot, the play also features a number of subplots, including the romantic entanglements of other characters and the comedic antics of a group of American soldiers. Throughout the play, Tyler uses humor to comment on the cultural differences between America and Britain, and to satirize the social norms and expectations of the time.
