The Coquet Or The English Chevalier: A Comedy is a play written by Charles Molloy and first published in 1718. The story follows the adventures of a young Englishman named Sir John Bevil, who is a notorious flirt and womanizer. He is known as ""the English chevalier"" due to his charming and debonair demeanor. The play begins with Sir John returning to England after spending several years abroad. He is immediately drawn to the beautiful and wealthy Lady Harriot, who is engaged to another man. Despite her initial resistance, Sir John uses his wit and charm to win her over and convince her to break off her engagement. However, Sir John's womanizing ways catch up with him when he is confronted by his former lover, Lady Lucy, who is determined to win him back. This leads to a series of comedic misunderstandings and mistaken identities as Sir John tries to juggle his various romantic pursuits. The Coquet Or The English Chevalier is a witty and entertaining play that satirizes the social mores and romantic conventions of 18th-century England. Molloy's clever dialogue and lively characters make for a delightful read, and the play remains a popular example of Restoration comedy to this day.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
