About The Book

This manuscript seeks to bring to life the historical development of the United States government, interpreting it for those who lack background knowledge on its origins and tracing its evolution through the critical founding years of the republic. There is complete coverage of themes that promote an understanding of how the national government of the United States was formed. An innovative pedagogical approach incorporates best practices in reading and study skills development to make the text unique and serves to make the U.S. political system understandable to different types of learners. The textbook provides an integrated approach to reading, writing, and thinking within social studies. Study skills are tightly woven into each chapter to support the content and to help students reinforce and expand their knowledge as they move through the book.

About The Author

Mark Paul Richard earned an A.B. in Government and Legal Studies from Bowdoin College, an M.A. in History from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. in History from Duke University. He began his career teaching social studies at the middle school level at the Landmark School in Massachusetts, and served as social studies department chair at its preparatory school campus, before becoming a founding faculty member of the Landmark College in Vermont, where he taught American Government and other content area courses for approximately eight years. He has since taught History at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, the Maine School of Science and Mathematics, and the State University of New York at Plattsburgh; he has also taught pre-service teachers in social studies education at the University of Maine at Fort Kent and at SUNY Plattsburgh. Dorothy A. Osterholt earned her master's degree in Education from Antioch University. She began her career teaching grades K - 8 in the public schools in northern Vermont. From there she moved on to teach English and Math in grades 9-12 and serve as an Academic Supervisor of other teachers at Landmark School in Massachusetts. She also became a founding faculty and Associate Professor of Education at Landmark College in Vermont. Having over thirty years of experience working with those who learn differently, she received the Outstanding Educator's Award from the New England College and Reading Association in 2013, and in 2014 was an honored nominee for Excellence in Teaching First-Year Seminar by the National Resource Center of the First-Year Experience. She also received the Outstanding Article Award for her piece, "A Collaborative Look to the Classroom" (2010) from the Journal of Developmental Education.
