Kiwao Nomura is the leading experimental voice in contemporary Japanese poetry, who has published twenty-six volumes of verse since 1987. This translation of The Day Laid Bare, originally published in Japanese in 2011 in the wake of the disasters of that year in Japan, is the first time one of his individual volumes has been translated into English. In The Day Laid Bare, Kiwao Nomura takes us on a tour through hell on earth, much like Dante's Inferno. The parades of flesh winding their way through Nomura's poem are living creatures both human and non-human, or often subhuman, but who nevertheless ultimately embody the human condition. The title, The Day Laid Bare, speaks to human life stripped down to its most basic reality - vulnerable and powerless. The entire work is overshadowed by the colossal earthquake and tsunami which destroyed much of the northeastern region of Japan in March of 2011. Thus, although expressed in the language of the absurd and the Felliniesque, Kiwao Nomura's The Day Laid Bare has an existential urgency.

Eric, Selland: - Eric Selland has been translating Modernist and contemporary Japanese poets for nearly forty years, with works appearing in a variety of journals and anthologies. He has also published articles on Japanese Modernist poetry and translation theory. His latest collection of poems is Object States (Theenk Books, 2018). Other recent books are Arc Tangent (Isobar Press, 2013), and Beethoven's Dream (Isobar Press, 2015). Eric has also translated a number of contemporary novels, including The Guest Cat, by Takashi Hiraide, published by New Directions in the US and Picador in the UK, which was on both the New York Times and the UK Sunday Times bestseller lists in 2014. Eric lives in Tokyo with his wife and a black Shiba Inu named Ku.

Nomura, Kiwao: - Kiwao Nomura (1951-) is the leading experimental voice in contemporary Japanese poetry. He is also a major critic and theorist, who, along with Shuri Kido, has been responsible for providing a whole new interpretation of Japan's postwar period in literature. He has also written on French poets, including a book-length analysis of Rimbaud as seen through the concepts of Deleuze and Guattari. He has published twenty-six volumes of verse since 1987 and translated the complete poems of René Char into Japanese. In September 2020 the Japan Poets Association awarded him their 38th Modern Poetry Prize for his 2019 volume Twilight Saudade.
