Some of the best childhood memories don't come from playing it safe.

They come from big ideas, a little bit of mischief, and learning things the hard way.

In The Day the Driveway Collapsed (Almost), two brothers set out to build something unforgettable-digging a tunnel beneath their family's dirt driveway using nothing more than old coffee cans and determination. What begins as a simple plan quickly turns into something much bigger, and far more dangerous, than they expected.

Watching from the sidelines-and sometimes right in the middle of it all-their younger sister gets a firsthand look at how quickly a good idea can turn into trouble. As the tunnel grows longer and deeper, so do the risks, until the moment comes when everything could have gone wrong.

Told through the lens of memory, this story captures the spirit of childhood curiosity, sibling dynamics, and the lessons learned along the way. It's a reminder that while not every idea is a good one, even the risky moments can become the stories we carry with us for a lifetime.

Part of the Memory Box series, this heartfelt and relatable story brings to life a time when imagination led the way, consequences followed close behind, and every day held the possibility of adventure.

Because sometimes, the things we remember most...
are the moments that almost didn't turn out okay.

Garcia, Kathleen Patterson: -

  1. About the Author

Kathleen Patterson Garcia is a family historian and genealogist, and serves as Historian for the Estes Family Association. Born and raised in California, she now resides in Utah, though she has visited Oregon many times-especially Camas Valley and the small cemetery beneath the apple tree.

Her work is inspired by original letters and documents recently acquired, and by a desire to preserve her family's history so that future generations can learn more about who they were and where they came from. Under the Apple Tree is her first historical fiction novel, and it has inspired her to write the life story of her third-great-grandparents, Joel and Patsey Estes.

In her free time, Kathleen enjoys traveling to ancestral historical sites, researching family lines, and helping family and friends discover their own ancestors.
