Chapter 1
The Day Time Stopped
June 1, 2024.
Election day.
Outside, people discussed democracy, votes, and political futures. Inside my life, another election was taking place. Life and death were standing at opposite polling booths.
My father suffered a heart attack.
No family is prepared for such a sentence. Heart attack. Two words. Yet they arrive like thunder splitting an old tree in half.
I still remember hospital corridors that day. The hurried footsteps. The smell of antiseptic. The tension in relatives' eyes. The helplessness of waiting outside emergency rooms while machines decided what humans could not.
I lost my father before completing my Ph.D.
Grief does not announce itself dramatically every day.
Chapter 2Four months later, I participated in a blood donation camp at the university.
A few days later, after giving a conference talk, I suddenly experienced dizziness and palpitations.
My heart raced wildly.
The body becomes terrifying when it behaves unexpectedly.
As a physics researcher, I trusted equations, logic, measurements, and observations. But anxiety is not easily solved by equations. The human mind can amplify sensations into storms.
I visited a hospital in Jatni.
Gas injection. Painkillers. Basic treatment.
Chapter 3When symptoms continue, the mind becomes a detective.
Every sensation feels suspicious.
Every heartbeat becomes noticeable.
I visited Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
The tests began.
TMT.
Echo.
The strange thing about hospitals is that time behaves differently there. Ten minutes can feel like an entire season.
My TMT and Echo reports were normal.
The heart appeared healthy.
Eventually, endoscopy revealed antral and fundus erosion with H. pylori infection.
Finally, another explanation.
The stomach, not the heart.
Acidity can imitate danger beautifully. GERD can produce chest discomfort, palpitations, throat tightness, neck sensations, burping, anxiety, and even breathing discomfort.
Chapter 4Then came the neck pain.
Constant.
Persistent.
Uncomfortable.
The body can become a map of fear. Every ache starts carrying philosophical meaning.
I visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Then SUM Hospital.
Different doctors.
Different opinions. Some believed the symptoms were connected to gastric issues and anxiety.
Others suggested posture problems.Medicines changed.Advice changed. But uncertainty remained unchanged.
Chapter 5Three months later, another incident happened. I was riding my bike. Suddenly, sleepiness overtook me for a brief moment, and the bike fell. The calf muscles were injured badly. Walking became difficult. An X-ray showed no fracture. No fracture.
Chapter 6In May 2025, I underwent a neck CT scan at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The report came normal.
Chapter 7Healing did not arrive dramatically. Medicine. Yoga classes.
Chapter 8December 2025. I completed my Ph.D. in Physics. I officially became Dr. Dipan Kumar Das. The title carried years of struggle, sleepless nights, research stress, emotional collapse, hospital visits, grief, and persistence.
Chapter 9Some storms become survivable when someone sits beside you quietly. Through medicines, healing routines, work responsibilities, and family life, I slowly rebuilt confidence in living again. I joined a college after completing my Ph.D. Teaching students gave me fresh direction.
