The Distress'd Wife is a play written by John Gay in the 18th century. The story revolves around the unhappy marriage of Lord and Lady Trifle. Lady Trifle is deeply unhappy in her marriage and seeks comfort in the arms of other men. Her husband, on the other hand, is oblivious to her unhappiness and is more concerned with his own affairs. The play explores themes of infidelity, love, and the societal expectations placed on women in the 18th century. It is a satirical piece that pokes fun at the upper class and their frivolous lifestyles. The play was first performed in 1715 and was well-received by audiences of the time. It remains a classic piece of literature and is still studied and performed today.Bart.
