The Distress'd Wife is a play written by John Gay in the early 18th century. The play revolves around the story of a young wife named Amanda, who is married to a wealthy but neglectful husband named Captain Constant. Amanda is unhappy in her marriage and longs for affection and attention from her husband. She seeks solace in the company of her friend, Lucy, and her cousin, Jack. However, her husband is suspicious of her friendship with Jack and accuses her of infidelity. The play explores themes of love, jealousy, and betrayal, and ends with a surprising twist. The Distress'd Wife is a classic example of a Restoration comedy and is known for its witty dialogue and sharp satire.Bart.
