From the Back Cover
A critical exploration of the 2000-year history of Realist thought and its place in the modern world In this unprecedented collection of specially commissioned essays, a diverse and international group of scholars address the question of 'Political Realism in our Times'. The results are provocative, stimulating and comprehensive. The essays may be read individually, or together. What the reader will take away, in either case, is an urgent sense that the situation has changed, and that political thinking must catch up. This substantial reference work therefore offers a detailed guide to Political Realism in the context of its history, scientific methodology and normative role in international affairs. It also considers its ground-up growth and interpretation in key non-Western geopolitical contexts, as well as seeking direct and creative engagement with such pressing issues as climate change, terrorism, global reform, nationalism and the future of the open society. With its clear organisation, authoritative introduction, bibliographies and index, The Edinburgh Companion to Political Realism is an indispensable resource and an inspiration for new and experienced researchers. Robert Schuett lives in Vienna and is the author of Political Realism, Freud, and Human Nature in International Relations (2010). Miles Hollingworth lives in Northern Italy and is the author of several books, including Saint Augustine of Hippo (2013) and Ludwig Wittgenstein (2018). Cover image: by Bahman Farzad.
