Sir Gooroodas Banerjee (1844–1918) was a pioneering Indian jurist, scholar, and educationist. He became the first Indian Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta (1890) and a judge of the Calcutta High Court (1888–1904). A professor of mathematics and law, he delivered the influential Tagore Law Lectures on Hindu marriage law. Knighted in 1904, he championed Indian education and social reform. Banerjee’s legacy endures through institutions named in his honor and his commitment to progressive values and justice.
