The First Call for Freedom: Unravelling 1857 in Lucknow is a unique and valuable effort in bringing to the fore stories of indomitable courage and initiation of freedom struggle in the then United Provinces. Spanning across the urban and rural areas of the Lucknow Division, it captures the historical turn of events, Indian discontent of British politics and administration, and the subject’s response to the continued atrocities of colonialism.
The Rebellion of 1857, variously referred to as the Sepoy Mutiny or India’s first war for freedom, was a reaction against the British East India Company's rampant exploitation of the people and resources of annexed princely states.
Lucknow played a central role in the events that unfolded, with a huge mass movement arising within its walls against the Company government, which held its ground till long after the rest of the strongholds across the subcontinent had fallen.
In addition to the history of the Lucknow Mandal during the rebellion, the book also brings to life numerous events, figures, and key turns in history that have remained in the shadows.
Based on authentic sources and without a trace of fantasy, a successful attempt has been made to unravel the era of valour, wars, and victories.
