Minda is an orphan, taken in by her practical and less-than-enthusiastic Aunt Karin. The Gate Swings In captures the mood, culture and wisdom of the Swedish folk. It is a perfect complement to Nora Burglon's much loved Danish tale, Sticks across the Chimney.

Ms Burglon (1901-1976) lived in Everette, Washington, for most of her adult life. She wrote ten children's books and numerous magazine articles. Of Swedish background, she was widely traveled and her books carefully researched for accuracy of detail and sense of place. Her Children of the Soil, a story of Scandinavia was named an honor book by the Newbery Foundation.
