General Letters is a common description of the seven short letters than immediately follow Hebrews in our English Bibles. These seven letters have only 21 chapters-James has five chapters, 1 Peter has five chapters, 2 Peter has three chapters, 1 John has five chapters, and the books of 2 John, 3 John, and Jude are so brief that they are not divided into chapters. They are usually described as one-chapter books. By volume, the General Letters make up approximately 7% of the New Testament. The designation as General Letters is an apt description in the sense that the letters are not addressed to specific churches or individuals. The exceptions are 2 John and 3 John, both of which appear to be addressed to specific indi-viduals. The book of 1 John does not mention the recipients and does not have the typical characteristics of a first-century letter. Two prominent themes in the General Letters are suffer-ing and heresies.

Dr. Bob Young (B.A., M.A., D.Min.) After spending almost 30 years in preaching and local church ministry, Bob worked in Christian higher education where he served as Bible professor, Bible program director, and executive vice-president at Ohio Valley University; and as director of the graduate Bible program at Oklahoma Christian. In his retirement, he serves as missionary, author, and speaker, maintaining a full schedule with churches in the U.S. and across Latin America. His 50 years of ministry in preaching and teaching have extended to 26 states and 18 countries. In addition to his undergraduate studies that were focused in the biblical text, he completed graduate studies in preaching and leadership development. He holds minors in Greek and Biblical Languages. He is editor and translator of a Spanish evangelism series (En Pos de la Verdad) with more than 50,000 lessons in print. This series of Bible Study Guides represents his first publications in book form. He recently e-published two monographs in English (An Easy Model for Bible Exegesis, and How to Move from the Text to the Sermon), and has also e-published five monographs in Spanish.
