Some families hide their darkest secrets, others bury them... After the sudden death of her father, Kate's cold-hearted grandmother treats her like a lowly servant inside her isolated estate. Falling in love with a young stable hand only complicates matters when she discovers her rival for his affections is Clara - the one person who has treated her with kindness since her ordeal began. Now Clara will stop at nothing to eliminate the competition even if it means that her friend has to die. But, according to the gravestone in the family plot, Kate Embry is already dead.

Renee Ross was born in 1961. It was during the late sixties and early seventies that she developed a love for the Gothic genre which was wildly popular at the time. "I remember the excitement of standing at the book rack in the dime-store perusing the many covers which depicted a terrified young woman fleeing a castle usually barefoot and in her nightgown." It was also during that time that the Gothic soap opera, "Dark Shadows" was on every afternoon. "We had no way of recording programs to watch later back then, and I remember rushing home from school just in time to see the last 10 minutes of the show." Her favorite authors include Dorothy Eden, VC Andrews, and Florence Hurd - just to name a few. Though she does not attempt to emulate any one writer in particular, she does aim to recreate the vintage Gothic experience for readers of her generation as well as younger readers who are discovering them for the first time."Hopefully movies like Crimson Peak, My Cousin Rachel, The Woman in Black and Beguiled are a sign that traditional Gothic romance will never go out of style."
