Since the 1600s, black Americans have worked in the horse racing industry, but societal segregation in the 20th century progressively put an end to their dominance of this illustrious sport. Not much has been said about black people's accomplishment in the world of horse racing.

13 of the 15 jockeys in the first horse race in America, the 'Run for Roses', held at Kentucky Derby in 1875, were black. There were 28 iterations of the 'Run for Roses' race in Kentucky Derby, and Afro-Americans controlled 15 of those races.

Just before the Jim Crow era drove them out, black jockeys and horsemen dominated Thoroughbred racing from the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 through 1903.This book chronicles the historical contributions made by black people to the development of horse racing, both in the present and in the past.
