The Hippolytus of Euripides is a Greek tragedy written by Euripides. The play tells the story of Hippolytus, a young man who is devoted to Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. However, he has incurred the wrath of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, by refusing to worship her. In revenge, Aphrodite causes Hippolytus' stepmother, Phaedra, to fall in love with him. Despite his best efforts to resist her advances, Hippolytus is falsely accused of attempting to rape Phaedra and is subsequently banished by his father, Theseus. The play explores themes of love, jealousy, and the destructive power of the gods. It is considered one of Euripides' most famous works and has been adapted numerous times in literature, theater, and film.1881. Edited, with Introduction, Notes and Appendix by J.P. Mahaffey and J.B. Bury. Euripides's admirers claim that he is the most tragic of the Greek tragedians, the most pathetic of the Attic poets, the most humane in his social philosophy and the most skillful in psychological insight.
