The book "The Hippolytus of Euripides: With English Notes" (1853) presents the classical Greek tragedy, Hippolytus, penned by the renowned playwright Euripides. The narrative revolves around Hippolytus, son of Theseus, a devoted follower of the goddess Artemis, who rejects his stepmother Phaedra's advances. In her despair, Phaedra falsely accuses Hippolytus, leading to tragic consequences for both. This edition includes comprehensive English notes offering insights into the play's language, themes, and historical context. Additionally, the notes provide explanations of Greek mythology, culture, and literary devices used by Euripides.

Euripides was a tragedian of classical Athens. Along with Aeschylus and Sophocles, he is one of the three ancient Greek tragedians for whom any plays have survived in full. Some ancient scholars attributed ninety-five plays to him. Frederick Apthorp Paley (1815–1888), an English classical scholar, he studied at Shrewsbury School and St John's College, Cambridge (BA 1838). In 1874, Mgr Thomas Capel appointed him professor of classical literature at the Roman Catholic University in Kensington.
