About The Author

John Pyke Hullah (1812–1884) was a transformative English composer and educator who championed the Victorian singing‑class movement. Trained under William Horsley and at the Royal Academy, he produced operas including The Village Coquettes (libretto by Charles Dickens) After studying in Paris, he introduced Wilhelm’s fixed‑“do” solfège in London (1840–60), teaching thousands at Battersea, Exeter Hall, and St Martin’s Hall He authored popular sight‑singing series Vocal Scores (1846) and Part‑Music (1867) Appointed the UK’s first Musical Inspector of Training Schools in 1872, he helped embed music in national education Though he opposed tonic sol‑fa, his emphasis on artistic integrity and choral teaching shaped formal music education and the 19th‑century choral revival.
