Like criticism, translation is always a text about a text and hence it is a metatext. We translate by intuition. There is no ‘Science of translating’ though there are scientific theories of translation. In this book, Dr. B.K. Das has made a thorough analysis of various aspects of Translation Studies — both in the East and the West. Apart from making a background study of Translation, Dr. Das has discussed the problems as well as the limits of Translation. He has analysed Translation as Creative Writing, as Linguistic-Bridge Building and above all, as Nation Building. This is a highly useful and well-researched book on Translation Studies in our Country.

Dr. Bijay Kumar Das has published a number of books and research papers on English literature, Indian English Literature, Commonwealth Literature, Translation and Literary Criticism. His books include, A Study of Sarojini Naidu’s Poetry (1977), Modern Indo-English Poetry (1982), Critical Perspectives on Relationship and Latter Day Psalms (1986), Modern Indian English Poetry (1992), The Poetry of Jayanta Mahapatra (1992), Aspects of Twentieth Century Criticism (1992), Critical Essays on Poetry (1993), A Reader’s Guide to Ten Twentieth Century Indian Poets (1993), Perspectives on Indian English Poetry Criticism (1993), Aspects of Commonwealth Literature (1995), The Horizon of Nissim Ezekiel’s Poetry (1995) and Twentieth Century Literary Criticism (1995).
