This book offers a concise and broadly appealing exploration of architectural styles that have endured across diverse nations and throughout the course of history. The book delves into the rapid progress achieved in the fields of art and architectural research during the past half-century. It underscores the significant accumulation of new source materials, the development of critical principles, and the transformation of the study of arts and architecture from a mere focus on aesthetics into a more profound philosophical inquiry. Furthermore, the book addresses the challenges inherent in accurately describing architectural particulars and dimensions, particularly when source materials lack completeness or reliability. The passage concludes with expressions of gratitude for the support and contributions from those who aided in creating the work.

James Fergusson FRS (1808–1886) was a Scottish-born architectural historian. He is primarily recognized for his keen interest in Indian historical architecture and antiquities, making him a significant contributor to the 19th-century rediscovery of ancient India. Although he began his career as a businessman and lacked formal architectural training, he ventured into architectural design and decorative schemes. His initial insights into Indian architecture were documented in his 1845 publication, "The Rock-cut Temples of India." This work marked the starting point of his journey into analyzing the historical and aesthetic aspects of ancient Indian structures. Fergusson's passion for architectural exploration further prompted him to undertake a comprehensive historical and critical comparative examination of architecture as a whole. This endeavor culminated in the publication of "The Illustrated Handbook of Architecture" in 1855, spanning two volumes. This handbook provided a concise and popular account of various architectural styles prevailing throughout different ages and countries. In 1862, he followed it up with "A History of the Modern Styles of Architecture," serving as a sequel to his earlier handbook.
