The Indian Archipelago: Its History and Present State by Horace Stebbing Roscoe St John is a two-volume historical and political account of Southeast Asia, published in 1853. The work explores the rich cultural, economic, and colonial history of the region, focusing on areas such as the Malay Archipelago, Borneo, Java, and Sumatra. St John examines indigenous societies, European colonization—especially Dutch and British influence—and the strategic and commercial significance of the archipelago. Written in a detailed yet accessible style, the book reflects 19th-century imperial perspectives while offering valuable insights into the political and social dynamics of the region during that era.

Horace Stebbing Roscoe St John (1832–1888) was an English journalist and author, youngest son of James Augustus St. John. Born in Normandy and educated by his father, he began writing early, contributing to major newspapers like the Daily Telegraph and The Times. In 1854, he co-edited Utopia, a short-lived journal, and wrote for The Athenæum and Seven Days' Journal. Despite literary success, he declared bankruptcy in 1862. He authored several historical works, including biographies and studies on British India and the Indian Archipelago. His wife, daughter of Thomas Roscoe, was also a published author of historical and biographical works.
