This book, titled "The Indigenous Drugs of India," provides concise descriptions of various medicinal substances used by the native population. Initially conceived as a descriptive catalogue for an international exhibition in Paris, it was later expanded and offered to medical practitioners in India. The descriptions of these substances are largely drawn from existing sources, such as the Bengal Dispensatory and other medical works. The book aims to encourage further exploration of these native drugs, hoping to establish their efficacy and promote their use in place of costly English medicines.

Kanny Lall Dey (1831-1899), a notable Bengali physician and pharmaceutical chemist, made significant contributions to the field of Indian medicine. He wrote a comprehensive compilation on Indian medicinal plants and advocated for the use of traditional and modern medical approaches. Beginning his career in government service as a sub-assistant surgeon, he later became a chemistry professor at the Presidency College, Calcutta. Dey received recognition and honors, including the title of Rai Bahadur, and was an Honorary Member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. He collaborated with renowned scientists like Sir George Watt and Sir George King, serving on the Indigenous Drugs Committee for the Government of India.
