The Iron Gates of Life is about the restrictions and prejudices that face any younger person trying to move on into young adulthood and a career of their own choosing. These five historically set short stories talk about the Holocaust, PTSD after Word War II and the Korean War, prejudice in the deep south in the 1960s, the growth of everyday addiction problems in the 1970s, and the need to tear down walls in the 1980s. The stories do not preach. But they teach and they illuminate. Recommended for emerging adult readers from the ages of15 to 21 years old.

David Murphy was born and grew up in Atlanta. His parents were staunch Roman Catholics, and so he went to parochial school and then on to an all-boys Catholic military high school. His parents died together in a plane crash when he was thirteen. Through high school he lived with relatives. After high school, he went to Vanderbilt University where he majored in English. He spent the next two years on active duty with the U.S. Navy. He spent a long career in business, in later years as a subcontractor to training/consulting companies under their contracts with the large automotive manufacturers in the United States. At age sixty-four and a half, one of the major companies so dramatically altered the terms of their agreement that David and about one hundred sixty other subcontractors lost their jobs. So at sixty-four and a half, David decided to start writing books. For a living, that is, not just to turn out memoir of his life. The Iron Gates of Life is his third book. The first two are aimed at younger children. The Iron Gates directly addresses the difficult hurdles that face a sixteen or seventeen year old. A Junior in high school, knowing this is the make or break year to impress colleges. And facing the real boy/girl issues for the first time. And being able to see through the authoritative postures of teachers, school principals, parents with social problems, plus historical issues in the world that will almost certainly impact their own lives. David believes that intelligent, focused teens in this age group are confronted with these issues and can have their ambitions thwarted. To break through these issues and endure and move on, that's what it means to break through The Iron Gates of Life.
