About The Book

The Life She Chose captures the ambition and dedication of an independent woman in the late 1800s, while she witnessed the restrictive societal expectations for women striving to step beyond the traditional boundaries and pursue a career and a fulfilling life. Born in 1849, the last of eleven children, Emily Frances Wheeler was the daughter of an Erie Canal boat captain and sister to David Hilton Wheeler, a Northwestern University professor of English literature and history as well as acting president for two years. Upon graduating from Northwestern in 1875, Emily studied in Paris, Leipzig, Rome, and Heidelberg, while also holding teaching positions at several institutions of higher learning. She became a full professor at Northwestern in romance languages in 1893. At NW, she assisted in the organization of the University Woman's Club and worked with the Northwestern Settlement. Throughout her life Emily published over 100 stories, literary critiques, and essays, often promoting the independence and self-sufficiency of women and leading groups of young women on European tours. Her accomplishments included hundreds of speaking engagements in Illinois and California, where she retired and became an outspoken advocate for higher education for women and social causes and an active speaker in a prominent woman's club for over twenty years before her death in 1934, at age 84.

About The Author

Dodge, Bonnie: - Bonnie Dodge earned a degree in music at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, in 1976, and went on to complete a master's degree in Developmental Reading at the University of Iowa in 1990. She taught 8th grade Language Arts for twenty years before retiring in 2013. She also taught private flute and piano lessons for forty years. In retirement Bonnie divides her time between genealogy research and volunteering at a local genealogy library, traveling, creating digital scrapbooks of her travels, playing in a steel drum band, serving on the board and performing in a local music club, and gardening. She lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with her husband.
