THE LONGER ROAD HOME is the fictional life story of Sam Freberg, an idealistic, troubled, gay Jewish musician born into a dysfunctional working class family in the 1940s. In his college years Sam discovers his same-sex orientation and comes out in the hostile environment prevalent in LA in the 60s. After brushes with law enforcement and descent into compulsive sex, drugs, and gambling, he joins the emerging gay liberation movement in the late 70s only to be confronted with AIDS a few years later when he is diagnosed HIV positive. The book is about Sam's struggle to survive, find himself, and recover from disease and addiction as he seeks health and inner freedom through therapy, 12-step programs, alternative medicine, yoga, and shamanism. In the spirit of On The Road, Portnoy's Complaint, Forest Gump, and Siddhartha, his is a gritty, humor-filled, heartfelt journey.

Cat Cohen is an ASCAP songwriter and instructor with songs recorded by Cheryl Lynn, Freddie Hubbard, and Bo Diddley and in the feature films The Rat Pack and Undercover Brother. Since moving from L.A. to the Southern California high desert, he's been an active Palm Springs Writers Guild member with eight non-fiction books on food, travel, and pop music. His interest in contemporary issues such as recovering from addiction and surviving HIV/AIDS motivated him to write The Longer Road Home, his first novel. Currently, Cat performs as a pop music therapist in hospitals, recovery homes, and rehab centers bringing healing through American and international songs plus some of his own compositions.
