First published in 1927, The Magic Casket is the final original collection of Freeman's Dr. Thorndyke short stories. Cleverly constructed, richly atmospheric, and grounded in authentic forensic method, these nine cases demonstrate why Thorndyke remains one of the most important scientific detectives in the history of mystery fiction.

About The Author

Freeman, R. Austin: - R. Austin Freeman (1862-1943) was a British physician and author best known as the creator of Dr. John Thorndyke, one of detective fiction's earliest and most influential scientific investigators. Freeman's medical training gave his stories an unusual degree of technical accuracy, allowing Thorndyke to solve crimes through pathology, chemistry, microscopy, legal medicine, and the careful interpretation of physical evidence.Freeman helped establish the forensic detective story as a distinct branch of mystery fiction and became particularly associated with the "inverted detective story," in which the reader witnesses the crime before following the investigator's reconstruction of it. His methodical plots and insistence on rational, demonstrable solutions influenced generations of crime writers and anticipated many techniques later associated with modern forensic investigation.
