The Malady of the Century is a book written by Max Nordau, a Hungarian physician and writer, in 1895. The book is a critique of the cultural and intellectual trends of the late 19th century, which Nordau believed were leading to a decline in Western civilization. Nordau argues that the rise of individualism, materialism, and skepticism in art, literature, and philosophy were symptoms of a larger malady that he called ""degeneration."" Nordau believed that degeneration was a physical and mental disease that affected individuals and society as a whole. He argued that degenerates were characterized by a lack of self-control, a tendency towards violence and criminal behavior, and a disregard for social norms and values. Nordau saw degeneration as a threat to the stability and progress of Western civilization, and he called for a return to traditional values and social order. The book was controversial when it was first published and sparked a debate about the nature of degeneration and its causes. Some critics accused Nordau of being overly pessimistic and reactionary, while others praised his insights into the cultural and social trends of the time.
