Amara Bennett is fighting a losing battle against a rare blood disorder, her only hope resting on the anonymous kindness of a stranger: a perfect bone marrow donor. Her life is a relentless decline until she collides with Lucas Rowan, a high-powered finance executive suffocating in an existential void, whose quiet sacrifice just weeks before saved a life he will never know.
Their connection is immediate, fierce, and undeniable. As they fall deeply in love, their bond accelerates, fueled by the ticking clock of Amara's survival. Lucas becomes her Anchor, the steadfast purpose she clings to during the agonizing transplant. But the secret Lucas guards-that the man she loves and the anonymous savior she worships are one and the same-begins to destroy him.
The weight of his selflessness, coupled with the crushing irony that his life-saving gift causes a subsequent illness (GVHD), drives Lucas to the brink of collapse. The discovery of the truth shatters their world, forcing Amara to confront the unbearable burden of a debt she can never repay.
When the ultimate cost of the cure is revealed-the loss of their organic future-they must navigate a final, agonizing choice. Their journey moves from the chaos of biology to the chaos of bureaucracy, leading them to a hard-won peace defined by intentional living, shared purpose, and the unconditional love for the chaotic, beautiful life they choose to create together.
The Marrow of Fate is a testament to the ultimate resilience of the human spirit, exploring how the deepest acts of sacrifice can yield a love that is magnificent, messy, and eternal. Can a love story born of a lie survive the ultimate truth?
Smuts, Bianca de Koning: -
The author, Bianca Smuts (de Koning), lives and writes from the heart of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, where her life is deeply rooted in the soil of Humansdorp and the surrounding farm communities where she grew up. Her deep connection to the South African community often inspires the themes of resilience and belonging found in her writing.
A full-time accountant by trade, she dedicates her creative energy to exploring the universal themes closest to her heart: the unwavering power of friendship, the profound necessity of faith, and the quiet strength of courage.
She shares her life with her beloved husband, Bennie Smuts, and their three beautiful daughters (while always honoring the memory of their angel daughter). The family is active in the Dutch Reformed Church in the Loerie Community.
When she's not balancing ledgers or crafting emotionally resonant novels, you can find this proud farm girl indulging in the simple, joyful things: perhaps playing in the rain and mud with her children, or gathering friends and family around a perfect South African braai.
