“The only justification for our concepts and systems of concepts is that they serve to represent the complex of our experiences; beyond this they have no legitimacy.”

Albert Einstein's The Meaning of Relativity is a groundbreaking account that offers a concise and accessible explanation of his theories of special and general relativity. The book explores the revolutionary concepts that have reshaped our understanding of space, time and gravity. Einstein walks readers through the principles of relativity, addressing complex ideas such as the curvature of space, the nature of light and the behaviour of time under extreme conditions. He makes these once esoteric ideas comprehensible through concise, logical explanations while exploring their profound philosophical implications. This work stands as both a scientific milestone and a personal reflection of Einstein's journey to uncover the deeper truths of the universe. Ideal for those seeking to understand the essence of modern physics, The Meaning of Relativity is an invaluable resource that distils the complexities of the cosmos into a narrative that is both intellectually stimulating and accessible to the curious mind.

Endorsement

“Albert Einstein's famous equation E=mc2 for the first time connected the mass of an object with its energy and heralded a new world of physics”.

—The Guardian

Albert Einstein (1879–1955) was a German theoretical physicist renowned for developing the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics—two pillars of modern physics. His 1905 paper on the theory of relativity and his famous equation, E=mc², revolutionised our understanding of space, time and energy. In 1915, Einstein expanded this theory to include gravitation, formulating the general theory of relativity, which described gravity as the curvature of spacetime. His contributions to the photoelectric effect helped establish quantum theory, which later garnered him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.

Besides being a physicist, Einstein advocated for peace, civil rights and social justice. Fleeing the rise of the Nazi regime in the 1930s, he emigrated to the United States, where he continued his scientific and political work until his demise in 1955. Today, Einstein is considered one of the most influential scientists in history, and his name has become synonymous with “genius”.
