Dr. John Fernandez, a retired teacher of 31 years, independent scholar, and community activist, crafts a guidebook for academic scholars that conducts historical research and offers best practices for promoting educational equity in the California public school system.


Dr. Fernandez lends his extensive experience to readers as he expertly navigates the complicated history of education of Mexican/Latinos in California. He accomplishes four objectives with this work: providing recommendations to eradicate racialized policies in the California K-12 public schools and in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD); to address the historic low academic achievement level of Mexican/Latino K-12 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD); to address California and LAUSD charter school issues and accountability; and to significantly increase educational equity for Mexican/Latinos students in California's K-12 public schools in general and the LAUSD from grades K-12.


The Mexican/Latino Struggle for Educational Equity in California, 1492-2022 offers policy makers, K-12 teachers, and college professors a substantial amount of educational data and program recommendations to promote educational equity strategies for K-12 Mexican/Latino student populations.

Fernandez, John Y.: - Dr. John Y. Fernandez is a retired teacher, independent scholar, and community activist. Influenced early in issues of educational equity, Dr. Fernandez participated in the historic 1968 East Los Angeles student walkouts as a senior at Abraham Lincoln High School. That experience motivated him to go on to college and become a public-school teacher. Dr. Fernandez holds over 35 honors and distinctions, including bilingual bicultural certification in history and social science and special education. He has conducted workshops to K-12 teachers, university professors, and graduate students on media literacy and culturally relevant and responsive teaching.
