The Miser is a play written by the renowned 18th-century English author, Henry Fielding. The play is a satirical comedy that tells the story of a wealthy old man named Harpagon, who is obsessed with his money and will go to any lengths to protect it. Harpagon is so miserly that he even refuses to spend money on his own children and is constantly scheming to find ways to increase his wealth.The plot of the play revolves around Harpagon's attempts to find a suitable husband for his daughter, Elise, and a wife for himself. However, his plans are complicated by the fact that his son, Cleante, is in love with Elise and Harpagon's own love interest, Mariane, is being pursued by another man. The play is full of twists and turns as the characters try to outwit each other and achieve their own goals.The Miser is a classic example of 18th-century English comedy and is known for its sharp wit and biting satire. Fielding uses the play to comment on the greed and selfishness of the upper classes and to poke fun at the absurdities of their social customs and manners.
